Norway is out of butter. This is old news, offcourse. But a lot of foreigners (and Norwegians too) seem to wonder: HOW COULD THIS HAPPEN?
Many people blame the "low-carbers", other people blame the gonverment. The truth is this a bit of both and more: Farmers in Norway are only allowed to sell a certain quota of milk. If they have more milk then the quota allows....they have to pour it out...basically.
Farmers are paid by the state~
Then the is the fact that the Norwegian gonverment wants us to stand on our own feet when it comes to food, which is fine, but this means Tine, which is the biggest company producing butter, milk, etc, can't import neither Milk, nor Butter or anything, I guess...
So when the demand for butter rises, they don't have enough milk, no milk...no butter.
And the demand has risen, low-carb is very popular in Norway these days. Not to mention it's become more and more important to people to eat "clean", margarine is not exactly natural. Aannnd, the butter crisis started just before Christmas, butter is a big deal around Christmas time... MUST BAKE!
It's more pf a political issue, than anything else. Norwegians aren't running around screaming for butter. I mean we still have Cream, and if you have Cream, you have Butter, eyh? 8D
